Elta Jewell Starling Knight, known by many as BG, was born on May 30, 1935 in Imboden, Arkansas, and went to her heavenly home Saturday, February 13, 2021 in Farmerville, Louisiana. She was surrounded by family and friends. She was a member of Farmerville Church of Christ.
She was a dedicated Christian wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She taught Bible class for many children in both Pineville and Farmerville for many years. She also taught the Ladies Bible Class on Wednesday nights She visited the sick and shut-ins up until COVID kept her at home last year. She loved sending cards for birthdays and other occasions.
She was the epitome of what a Grandmother is. She was named BG by Kandi when she was about a year old. BG was always there to take care of Kandi and Klint. She picked them up from the daycare almost every day and did homework with them. She took Kandi to all the dance classes, twirling classes, band practice and wherever else she needed to go until Kandi was old enough to drive. She always made sure Klint was taken care of. When Klint was 13 and too old to go the daycare, BG retired so he could come to her house every day. Nothing was more important to her than taking care of Klint and Kandi.
She was a substitute schoolteacher for about 11 years. She taught so much she was almost like a full-time teacher. When students saw her coming to their classroom, they knew it was not going to be an easy day just because there was a substitute there. There were several teachers who requested her to be their substitute when they knew they would be out for an extended time.
She worked for Union Community Action for 17 years. She focused on the JTPA program helping the youth get jobs. She loved helping them. We still have people come up to us today who tell us BG helped them when they were teenagers.
Mrs. Knight was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Knight; parents, J.V. and Geneva Starling; brother, Norman Wayne Starling; and granddaughter Abigail Violet Nichols Barlow.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Knight Johns and husband Chuck of Monroe; son, Steve Knight and wife Kim of Beaumont, TX; granddaughter, Kandi Kelley Collins and fiancé Al of Jackson, TN; grandson, Klint Kelley of Monroe, LA; great-grandson, Cash Collins of Jackson, TN; sister, Ella Starling Traylor of Greenville, SC; brother, Harvey Starling and wife Pat of Madison, AL; brother, Derrel Starling of Victoria, TX; special friends Lane and Louise Denton of Farmerville; and numerous nieces, nephews and treasured friends.
