Sister M. Mercedes, the former Serena Marie Hahn, was born October 20, 1897 the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Kocher Hahn in Stringtown, IL. She entered the Congregation on September 15, 1920 and professed her religious vows on April 30, 1923.
Sister was a 1925 graduate of St. John's Hospital School of Nursing. She served the community as a registered nurse at hospitals in Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin. From 1950 until 1971, she worked in the surgery department at St. John's Hospital, Springfield. She retired from active duty due to failing health in 1971.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by a sister: Bernadine Lewellen of Mattoon, IL; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and her Franciscan Sisters with who she shared her life for 81 years.
Visitation will be at the Motherhouse from 4-7:00 p.m. with a Wake service at 6:30 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2001. The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father John Ostdiek, OFM on Saturday, December 1, 2001 at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church at the Motherhouse. Burial will be in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.
