Hugh M Eley, 39, former geology professor at the University of Oklahoma until 3 years ago, died Sunday in a Dallas hospital from typhoid fever apparently contracted while working as a geologist in an oil field near Midland, Texas, for the Magnolia Oil Co.

Born in Texas, Eley obtained his master's degree from the university and after teaching for about 10 years in Jackson county, at Humphreys and Martha, returning to his alma mater to join the faculty, remaining about three years.

In 1939 he went to work for the Magnolia Oil Co., and lately had been in charge of geological work in Midland county. He became ill about 10 weeks ago from what was believed to be the effects of contaminated drinking water in an oil field.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Eley, Elmer: five brothers, H. D. Eley and Haskell Eley, both of Elmer: Jim Eley, Blair: Jack Eley, Tulsa, and Carl Eley, Phoenix, Ariz. and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Littlejohn, El Dorado, and Mrs. Edwin Park, Tulsa.
