Henry was one of the two children of German immigrants Herman Heinrich Hedeman (1809-1843) and Anna Margaretha Wiedermann. After his father's death, his mother Anna remarried Rossville grocer and farmer Philip Johnson, and Henry and his sister, Sophia (b. 1841), lived with them.

Henry worked for the B&O railroad during the Civil War, and he left a fascinating chronicle of everyday life supervising a railroad construction crew. He kept the journal in an account book that he used to record the crew's payroll.

He married Mary Bloss (1843-1929) approx. 1865. Sometime between 1870 and 1880, he left the railroad and went to work for a lumber yard.

Henry and Mary raised 11 children in their home on Greenmount Avenue, 10 of whom lived to adulthood: Ella (Hedeman) McCormick, James Laurence, Alexander Vincent, Harry Emerson, Walter Rider, Sophia (Hedeman) McCormick, William D. Gill Hedeman, Blanche, Rev. John R. T. Hedeman, and Rosamund (Hedeman) Berryman.
