A Terrible Accident.
John C. Adams met an awful death last Friday while working in a mine operated by the Braun Mining company on the South Side. He and Link Cole, while working in a drift, were nearly overcome by bad air, and realizing their danger, concluded to get to the surface. Adams got into the tub and started up first. The shaft is about sixty-five feet deep. When about fifteen feet from the surface he came in contact with the fresh air from above, and immediately he apparently fainted and fell to the bottom, striking on his head, and killing him instantly. Cole was afterwards raised and succeeded in getting out before he was completely overcome.
Adams was about twenty-two years old, and had been married about six months. He had lived in this city from boyhood. He was esteemed by all who knew him, and his sad and untimely death is deplored by the entire community. The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church today, and the remains were interred in the city cemetery.

Instantly Killed.
Friday morning while Link Cole and Johnny Adams were at work in a shaft on lot 18, East Galena, they discovered that the air was bad and concluded to go out. Adams got in the tub and gave the signal to hoist. He was up about fifty feet when he was overcome and fell back into the shaft, his jaw being split and his head mashed in a horrible manner. Deceased was a young man having been married to Miss Mays but about a year. Cole tied himself in the tub and was drawn out in safety. The affair is a sad one and the young wife has the sympathy of everyone in her sorrow.
