Mark Edward Ahlich, 70, of St. Imace, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018, at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, Florida, under the care of hospice. At the time of his death, Mr. Ahlich was surrounded by his family, following a four-year illness with cancer, which he fought with dignity and perseverance. He had been vacationing in Florida.
He was born September 12, 1947, to Dell and Phyllis (nee Ney) Ahlich in Petoskey.
Mr. Ahlich was graduated from the Ursuline Academy, and from LaSalle High School in 1966. He attended Davenport Business College, Ferris State University, and Kalamazoo Valley Business College. He was a faithful student of "A Course in Miracles" (Foundation for Inner Peace). He was a three-year veteran of the United States Army, and served in Vietnam for a year, from December 1968 to December 1969.
As a young man, he sailed on the Great Lakes on the ore freighter Wilfred Sykes and the dredge Haines. He also worked on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
Mr. Ahlich lived in New Orleans, Louisiana, for many years, where he established Crystal Clear Vision Window and Cleaning Services, which he successfully owned and operated for 30 years. He was one of the original founders and a longtime member of the International Window Cleaning Association (IWCA) since 1989.
He fulfilled a lifelong dream of relocating to St. Ignace, and in recent years purchased a house on Central Hill, bringing along his New Orleans spirit, using vividly colored paint and flowers that made his home a downtown focal point and conversation piece. He and his brother, Jim, illuminated the property spectacularly the past two holiday seasons, and their efforts were featured in an article published in the December 21, 2017, issue of The St. Ignace News.
Mr. Ahlich enjoyed camping, and he loved the game of golf. He was an avid rock collector, particularly pudding stones. Be was an ardent collector of early St. Ignace and area-related postcards and historical memorabilia.
He is survived by his siblings and their families: Carol Haege of Petoskey, Nancy and Conrad English of The Villages, Florida, Frank and Sally Ahlich, Barbara Crosby, and Jim Ahlich, all of St. Ignace, and Bill and Riche Ahlich of Trout Lake; nieces and nephews: Dan Haege, Frank and Michele Haege, Steve and Amy Perry, Laurie and Gary Emmons, Kristie and Brian Altonen, Carol Ann and Ben Minger, Katie and James Both, and Erica Ahlich and Amy Dunegan; and nine great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mr. Ahlich was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Frank and Lucille (nee Parish) Ahlich and William and Ada (nee French) Ney; a brother, Dell Jr.; a nephew, Daniel Crosby; and a niece, Sandra Kay Perry. Family and friends will gather Saturday, June 9, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Driftwood Restaurant in St. Ignace to share memories and celebrate his life.
Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in St. Ignace.
