W. Clive Sheppard

Winifred Clive Sheppard, 94, of Palestine, W.Va., passed away early on May 21, 2005, at home.

Clive was born to Dora Thorne Sheppard and Dick Prater Sheppard on Nov. 20, 1910, on the Sheppard homestead on Right Reedy Creek. He graduated from Wirt County High School, where he played football. He attended West Virginia University, where he was on the rifle team, Glenville College and Salem College. While in college, he boxed professionally. He married Myrdith Evelyn Thorne on Oct. 7, 1933.

He began his career by teaching in one-room schools. When he taught at Lucille, he walked seven miles each way. He later taught shop at Wirt County High School. After 23 years of teaching, he worked as a boilermaker until he reached retirement age. He was also a gunsmith. He lived on Right Reedy Creek on land that had belonged to his ancestor, Jonathan Sheppard, who was taken Prisoner of War by the English during the American Revolution.

His hobbies and interests included WVU football, hunting, fishing, shooting, local history and reading. He was a member of the Masonic Wirt Lodge 82 AF&M, Boilermaker Retirees Club 667, Wirt County Historical Society, American Rifle Society and Retired Teachers' Association. He was a United Methodist by faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Myrdith Evelyn Thorne Sheppard, who passed away Sept. 9, 1998; two sisters, Margaret Sheppard Hutchins and Bonilyn Sheppard Hively; as well as an infant brother.

He is survived by three sons, Jonathan Clive Sheppard of Parkersburg, Hugh Prater Sheppard of Fairplay, S.C., and Jesse Eugenus Sheppard of Washington, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Lynn Ann Reed of Parkersburg, Candace Sue Cooper of Raleigh, N.C., Gwendolyn Leigh McManus of Iva, S.C., Angela Marie Hunt of St. John, Ind., Rebecca Lynn Rodak of St. Albans, W.Va., and Matthew Clive Sheppard of Washington, W.Va.; six great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Matheny-Pomroy Funeral Home, Elizabeth. There will be a Masonic graveside service at Pisgah Cemetery on Garfield Road immediately after the funeral. Viewings will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Wirt County Historical Society, P.O. Box 891, Elizabeth, WV 26143.
