Mary was the youngest child of Adolph G. Berger and Lavina R. Berger nee Beck, and was born in the Troy Hill neighborhood of Allegheny City (now part of Pittsburgh). She had an older brother named William G., who was born in 1891. The 1910 Census has her working as a servant outside the home. On 08 January 1914 she married Robert Frank Heinsch. They lived with relatives on Lowrie Street, Troy Hill, Pittsburgh, PA, and later bought a home at 1928 Lowrie Street. Their first child, Robert Carl, was born in 1922, and their second child, Augusta Rose, was born in 1933. Mary lost her husband in January 1937; he was only 46. A year later, her daughter died. She supported the family by working at Oswald and Hess, and later as a laundry worker. On 11 November 1944 she married Harry Adam Blumer and lived at 5002 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh 24, PA; however that marriage ended in divorce on 06 March 1958. In the last years of her life, she lived in Saltsburg, PA, close to her son. Mary died of heart failure and pulmonary edema.

Mary's obituary appeared in The Pittsburgh Press of 25 September 1970 on page 38. It is as follows:

Thursday, Sept. 24, 1970, Mary Berger (formerly of Troy Hill and the East End) now of Saltsburg. Mother of Robert C. of Saltsburg, three grandsons and one great granddaughter. Friends received at the HUNTER FUNERAL HOME, Saltsburg. Services Saturday at 1:29 p.m. Interment United Cemetery, West View.
