According to his sister, Edna (Phillips) Beaver, Kenny Phillips was an energetic and fun-loving boy. One of his favorite playmates was a little girl named Josephine.
Kenny contracted diptheria when he was six years old. The entire family was vaccinated for the disease and then quarantined in their home for a period of time. Edna said that she became so ill from the effects of the vaccine that she nearly died. Kenny, however, didn't survive. He was placed in his coffin and displayed in the front window of their home for mourners to view from outside.
