Obituary:
Sudden Death at Lanes Mills

Mrs. Smith Kearney, Life Long Resident of Lanes Mills, Called By Death.

MRS. SMITH KEARNEY

The entire community was shocked when on Monday morning the report was circulated announcing the sudden death of one of the best known and most estimable women of the Lanes Mills district. Mrs. Smith Kearney.

Mrs. Smith Kearney always a very active and industrious woman had been in her usual health on Sunday, performing her household duties, and attending Church at Grove Summit in the afternoon as was her custom. About 6 o’clock in the evening she was suddenly stricken with paralysis and passed away at 12:10 the following morning.

The circumstances of Mrs. Kearney’s death brought very forcibly to the minds of older residents the fact that her mother died even more suddenly, dropping dead in the street, a number of years ago.

The family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community, in their great loss. She was an exemplary wife and mother, a good neighbor and consistent and earnest Christian, a member of the M. E. Church.

Mary Altera Marshall was born on November 3rd, 1878 at the homestead near Lanes Mills. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Marshall. Her entire life was spent in this community.

She was united in marriage with Matthew Smith Kearney June 12, 1902.

She is survived by her husband and the following children, Russell of Honduras, S. A., Mrs. Rachel Harding of Youngstown, Ohio., Margaret [ your Grandmother Thompson ] a nurse in training at the Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, Kathleen and Gwendolyn at home.

She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters, James E. of Brockport, Pa., Paul A. Brockway; Thomas J of Kittanning; Alex J. of Ridgway; Mrs. C. A. McLaughlin of Brockway; Mrs. Wm. Cunningham, of DuBois; Mrs. Harry Hemstreet of Chicago, Ill; Mrs. Geoffrey Linder of London England.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the residence, by Rev. D. Ralph Dunn assisted by Rev. V. Thompson of Falls Creek, and interment was made in the Beechwoods Cemetery.
