Jones County, Georgia - Carl Leonard Wheeler, Sr., died at home Sunday, January 31, 2021. He was 92 years old.

He was born in Jones County, GA to the late Rufus Lee Wheeler and Eddie Gertrude Greene Wheeler.

Carl was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mary Jackson Wheeler and sister, Eddie Fay Wheeler Hawkins.

He was raised in Jones County and he attended Jones County Schools and the University of Georgia. He was a member of Clinton United Methodist Church for 80 years. Mr. Wheeler served a short time in Germany with the Army.

He loved working and running Wheeler's Nursery with his wife, Mary for almost 70 years. Carl and his father, R.L. Wheeler, originated, named, and registered over 30 varieties of camellias with the American Camellia Society. He grew and sold hundreds of thousands of budded peach trees, having sold one quarter million in one year. He loved working with trees and plants and dealing with customers. His father R.L. Wheeler started Wheeler's Nursery in 1920. Carl's son, Len and grandson, Carl III also worked at the nursery until it reached its 100th year in 2020.

Carl and Mary loved to take trips, visiting all 50 of the United States of America, 20 countries, and five continents. He was a member of Sincerity Lodge 430, receiving his 70- year apron from his Blue Lodge, was a Scottish Rite Mason, Al Sihah Shriner, and Loyal Order of Jesters member. He served on several boards, including Jonesco Academy, Medcen Foundation, Georgia Federal, and Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance.

Carl was a man of honor, strength, dignity, and hard work. He was kind, honest, giving, caring, and a blessing to all who knew him. Carl will be deeply missed.

Services will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 11:00AM at Harts Mortuary, Jones County Chapel, 307 Pecan Lane, Gray, GA. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Service. Burial will be at the Wheeler family cemetery in Bradley, GA.

Carl is survived by his son, Carl "Len" Wheeler, Jr., (Melanie), daughter, Jill Wheeler Thompson (Chuck), six grandchildren; Carrie Wheeler Thacker (Brandon), Carl L. Wheeler, III (Danielle), Mary "Katie" Thompson Kern (Robby), Bruce Carroll all of Jones County, GA, Kevin Thompson (Sara) of Dublin, GA, and Chris Carroll (Chelsea) of Jacksonville Beach, FL; nine great-grandchildren; Berkeley and Banks Thacker, Watson Carl and Walker Wheeler, Carlee Jill and Luke Kern, Harper Thompson, and Hayden and Wyatt Carroll.
