Mary F. Spears was born about 1865 in Merced County, Calif., to Spencer King Spears and Martha J. Spears. She married Enoch Elmore Akers in Merced County on Dec. 5, 1883. They moved to San Jose before 1888.

On July 10, 1888, the Tulare Advance-Register (Tulare, Calif.), reported that "Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Ellert have gone to San Jose in response to a telegram announcing the severe illness of Mrs. E. E. Akers, sister of Mrs. Ellert." Mrs. Ellert (Minnie) was the daughter of S. K. Spears of Merced County, Calif., per her death notice in the San Francisco Chronicle (June 7, 1899).
