Harrisonburg Daily News, April 1, 1905

George D. Dovel, brother of Alonzo Dovel, who resides on East Market street, died of heart disease Thursday morning at his home in East Rockingham, a short distance from Shenandoah City. He had been in frail health for the past year and his death was not unexpected.

Mr. Dovel, who was 60 years old, was a Confederate veteran and was held in high esteem in the neighborhood where he was best known. He was for twenty years an active member of the Lutheran church.

Surviving him are a widow and six grown children. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Diana Dovel, who lives near Honeyville, in Page Couny. He was a cousin of Policeman Frank Dovel, of Harrisonburg.

Funeral services will be held today at the house. The internment will be made in the family burying ground on the farm.

Native of Page County, with Large Rockingham Relationship, Buried Saturday Near Shenandoah

The funeral of George Decatur Dovel, who died in East Rockingham, near Shenandoah City, last Thursday, was held Saturday and was attended by a large gathering of relatives and friends. The services were conducted by Revs. M. A. Ashby, of Shenandoah, and I. Conder of McGaheysville.

Mr. Dovel was the fourth child of a family of eleven children of Adam and Diana Dovel. He was born near Honeyville, Page county, August 11, 1843, and had attained the age of 61 years, 6 months, and 24 days. He was married to Mary J. Welfey July 6, 1866, by Rev. Joseph Allemong, of the Christian church, and was confirmed into membership of St, Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church, in Page county, May 28, 1871, by the late Rev. Dr. Socrates Henkel, at that time pastor of the congregation.

Deceased was the father of nine children, four of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his widow and five children - W. C. Dovel, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; L(uther) A. Dovel, of Albemarle County, Va.; George Henry, Miss Lena F. and Alfred W. Dovel, of Shenandoah, Va. He also leaves three brothers and four sisters - A. L. Dovel, of Harrisonburg; A(dam) B(eauregard, Jr.) Dovel, of Honeyville; I(saac) N. Dovel, of Iowa; Mrs. Talitha Jane Dovel, of Shenandoah; Mrs. S. L. Kerns, of Honeyville; Mrs. Julie Kite, of Rockbridge county; and Mrs. A(lbert) (Solon, Jr.) (Lovenia Florence) Huffman, of Honeyville.

His mother, Mrs. Diana Dovel, also survives him, at the age of 86 years.
