Mathew McKeighan was born in Farmington, Illinois on October 29, 1856 to Robert and Ellen (Tuttle) McKeighan of England. Mathew spent most of his youth in Toulon, Illinois. He was married to Louisa Culbertson when he was 30 years old on September 27, 1887 at the Virginia House in Toulon. The Virginia House was a hotel operated by Louisa's grandmother, Louisa (Scammahorn) Culbertson Cooley. After this Louisa Cooley dies in 1893, the McKeighan family moves to Missouri where a number of the McKeighan siblings have gone. Later, Mathew and family move to South Dakota. Some time about the time of Mathew's death a family argument happens between his sons John and Sylvester. Sylvester is apparently drunk and threatens either John, or both John and Louisa, with a gun. Louisa and John were said to have left immediately, never to be heard from again. Literally. No contact the rest of their lives. I think Mathew would have been completely saddened over this event.
