Joshua A. Bevans was the son of well-to-do Baltimore County farmer James Lawrence Bevans and Pamela H. Andrews. He farmed with his father for several years after his 1868 marriage to local beauty Sophia Dorothy Hedeman (1841-1929).

Joshua moved his family to a farm in Franklin County, Ohio for several years between about 1877 and 1880. The family returned to Baltimore County about 1880.

Joshua and Sophia had six children: Edward Pagle Bevans, Helen, Frank, Harry Hedeman Bevans, Drucilia, and Lillian Adelade.
