Ernest F. Mechlin, 67, Patent Attorney Here Since 1916
Ernest Frederick Mechlin, 67, prominent Washington patent attorney, died of a heart attack yesterday at his home, 3026 Q street, N.W.
Mr. Mechlin was for many years a partner in the firm of Ritter & Mechlin here. After Gilbert P. Ritter's retirement last year, Mr. Mechlin entered partnership with a son, Wilmer Mechlin, with offices in the Tower Building.
Mr. Mechlin was general counsel for the Symington-Gould Corp. of New York and patent counsel for the Locke Insulator Co. of Baltimore, the Birdsboro Steel Founry and Machine Co., of Reading, Pa., and many other firms.
Born in Washington, Mr. Mechlin received a bachelor of science degree from George Washington University in 1907 and in the same year joined the Patent Office as an assistant examiner. He received a bachelor of laws degree in general and patent law from George Washington University in 1911 and was admitted to the District bar in that year. He left the Patent Office for the private practice of patent law here in 1916.
Mr. Mechlin was a former vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church in Georgetown and was treasurer of the Peabody Library. He was a member of the Chevy Chase Club and of the University Club.
He leaves his widow, Amelie Wilmer Mechlin; two sons, Wilmer Mechlin of 694 Rollingwood drive, Chevy Chase, Md. and E. Frederick Mechlin, jr., 5631 Massachusetts avenue N.W.; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret M. Pressly of Charlotte, N.C., and three grandchildren.
Mr. Mechlin was the brother of the late Miss Leila Mechlin, art editor of The Star for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Christ Church. Private burial will be in La Plata, Md.
