Sgt. Cudd was born March 10, 1960, a son of the late H.C. Cudd and Myrtle Smith Cudd. He was a 1978 graduate of Union Academy. He was a charter student at the school and was proud to say that he and his lifelong friend, Robert Brown, assisted Tommy’s Daddy with the construction of the original building and gymnasium.
Sgt. Cudd began his 37-year career in law enforcement on July 1, 1983 with the City of Union as a Reserve Officer, he was later hired as a City of Union Fireman and then became a Public Safety Officer. On May 29, 1986 he began his career with the Union County Sheriff’s Office under the leadership of then Sheriff William A. Jolly. During his tenure at the Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Cudd served under the leadership of five Sheriff’s. He was honored as Officer of the Year in 1992, 2010 and 2018 and had been honored as Employee of the Month several times. Even though he had battled Leukemia for a number of years, Tommy never allowed the disease or its treatments to hinder his duties of being an officer, even on his off days.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and enjoyed riding tractors. Tommy learned to work with his father on their cattle farm at a very young age, working with tractors, cutting and bailing hay, feeding the cattle, and eventually showing their prized cattle. He enjoyed camping and taking trips to the beach with his children.
