Beverly May Austen Coffey
January 3, 1929 - January 9, 2021
Resident of San Jose
Beverly May Austen Coffey passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 9, 2021 at the age of 92. She will always be remembered for her loving heart and warm, beautiful smile. She will be dearly missed.
Beverly (Bev) was born in Winnemucca, Nevada on January 3, 1929 to Ethel (Reussing) and Herman (Ast) Austen. She grew up in Winnemucca, along with her sister Dolores and brothers Herman Jr. and Robert. She graduated from Humboldt County High School in Winnemucca. After High School, Beverly moved to Mountain View, California with her parents.
Beverly earned her bachelor's degree and teaching credential from San Jose State University in 1952. She taught Elementary School in the Palo Alto School District and then went on to teach 1st grade in the Campbell Union School District for 25 years. Beverly was an exceptional teacher, she adored her students and loved teaching her 1st graders how to read. Beverly also enjoyed life-long friendships with her teaching colleagues.
She married Alan R. Coffey in 1953 in Mountain View, California. They met on a blind date, married 3 months later, and enjoyed 67 wonderful years together. Alan served in the Air Force and his duties took them to Wichita, Kansas for a brief time in 1954. Later that same year, they were transferred to San Bernadino, California where their first daughter, Alison was born in 1955. Alan left the Air Force in 1956 and they moved to Monte Vista, California. Their second daughter, Annette was born in 1957. They moved to a new home in Campbell, California in 1959 and their third daughter, Alana was born. Beverly's family was the greatest joy in her life. Her husband, children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren always felt her unconditional love.
Through the years, there were many beloved pets in the Coffey home: dogs, birds, turtles, fish, a cat and even a pet rat. Beverly always loved horses. She often recalled fond memories of her Dad and their horses, Kentucky and Robin. In her later years, she would gaze out the window at the hill behind their house and contentedly watched the horses wander the hillside. Beverly was also fascinated by hummingbirds. It gave her great pleasure watching them hover at the feeder. Her extensive collection of hummingbird figurines, ornaments, and music boxes filled almost every room in their home. Beverly was passionate about golf, she and Alan always enjoyed golfing together. She was a natural and achieved 3 Hole-In-Ones! Her favorite place to vacation and golf was Maui.
Beverly is survived by her husband, Alan; her 3 daughters, Alison Rivera, Annette Coffey (Patricia), and Alana Gielczyk (Stephen): her six grandchildren, Jennifer, Tye, Samantha, Stephen, Alan, Michael; her seven great-grandchildren, Helena, Robbie, Andrew, Elijah, Penny, Rigby, and Addison; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings.
No services are planned at this time due to the pandemic. Per Beverly's wishes, her ashes will be scattered in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Maui when it is safe for her family to travel.
