George Benjamin Easterling, Sr., 83, went home to the Lord on Monday, September 30, 2013, following a long illness. George was born June 28, 1930, to Abbie and Pierce Easterling of Port Arthur, Texas. George married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Ann Slater, on May 9, 1950.
George played football for the Port Arthur Yellow Jackets. At 16, he was the Golden Glove Boxing Champion for the state of Texas. He continued boxing, earning himself a scholarship to Mississippi Southern College.
George was employed by Sinclair Koppers Chemical Company in Port Arthur, Texas, for 35 years. He was also a charter member of the First United Methodist Church in Mauriceville, Texas, where he served on numerous offices of the board and was active in building the church. George loved to volunteer. He was an active board member and volunteer for the Orange County Christian Service Center, where he spent countless hours collecting food and stocking the kitchen.
George enjoyed hard work. He could always be found singing the gospel while on his tractor clearing their land in Mauriceville. He especially enjoyed his time with his grandchildren. He was known to include them while doing his work outdoors, teaching, and loving them with every activity.
George and Shirley relocated to Portland, Texas in 2003 to be near family. During this time, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Portland, and was active in Sunday school and Senior Fling.
George is preceded in death by his parents, Abbie and Pierce Easterling, his four brothers, Pierce Jr., Eddie, Robert, and Sinclair. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley Ann; sons Ben (Sherry) Easterling of Plano, Texas, Roger Easterling of Owasso, Oklahoma; daughter Becky (Harry) Chester of Portland, Texas; seven grandchildren, Michael (Audra) Chester of Portland, Texas, Aaron (Billie) Easterling of The Woodlands, Texas, Cari (Chris) Kahl of Rosenberg, Texas, Lance (Melanie) Easterling of Katy, Texas, Mark (Crystal) Chester of San Angelo, Texas, Brant (Aricka) Easterling of Owasso, Oklahoma, and Patrick Easterling of California; including twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Our family is thankful to the staff of Tri-Sun Coastal Nursing Home and Girling Hospice for their commitment of care during the last two years of his illness.
We are also thankful for the years of joy and love we had with him, along with the memories and the laughter. His legacy of love for his family will live on in all of our lives, and for that, we are forever grateful.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 5th, 2:00pm, at the First United Methodist Church in Portland, Texas.
