Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Joan Inez Russell Abston; four sisters, and four brothers.
He was survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Abston Wallace (Barry); sons, David Eugene Abston (Debra), and James Barry Abston (Pippa); ten grandchildren, Angel Abston (A.J.), Airon Abston, Justin McCrary, Jody McCrary (Malea), Daniel Seth Abston, Erin Elizabeth Abston, Rachel Amberly Studdard (Michael), Raquel Bethany Studdard (Ryan), Mary Caroline Townsend, and Katie Breanna Hall; four great grandchildren, Hagan McCrary, Adison McCrary, Lily McCrary, and Saylor McCarter.
Gene was born on Tuesday, January 25, 1927 in Benevola, AL to the late Albert Tennell Abston and Lillie Catherine Powell Abston. He was a member and deacon of Forest Baptist Church, a retired machinist at Westinghouse, and a U.S. Navy World War 2 Veteran. Honorary Pallbearers will be his special nieces and nephews, Pam Baggett, Linda Clark, Mike Maughn, Mary Gunter, and Martha “Molly” Crane, deacons and members of Forest Baptist Church, members of the Benevola community, and staff at Sansing Country Home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery fund, and Forest Baptist Church cemetery fund in care of Doug Sanders 1291 Benevola Rd. Gordo, AL 35466.
