Lee R. Allen, 83, formerly of Dunlap, passed away at Park West Care Center, Seattle, Wash., on Feb. 5, 2007.

He was born in Dunlap, the son of Dr. Benton and Lura Allen. He graduated from Dunlap High School in 1941 and attended Washington University in St. Louis.

Enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1943, he served with the Second Marine Division in the Marianas Campaign, seeing action on Saipan and Tinian. He returned to the United States in early 1945 to attend a Marine Corps Officer Candidate Program at the University of Michigan. Discharged in 1946 following the end of the war, he married Patricia Bird of Ann Arbor.

They lived in the Alta and Dunlap area from 1946 to 1949, and again from 1954 until 1969, when the family moved to northern Illinois. They moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1972, where he was employed by the Parking System of the City of Ann Arbor from 1972 until his retirement in 1989. Following the death of his wife, Pat, in 2001, he continued to reside in Ann Arbor until July of 2005, when he moved to Seattle.

From 1954 until 2000, he raised registered Hereford cattle in Illinois and Michigan, and had the distinct honor of having been named Hereford Man of the Year in both states.

He is survived by a son, Brian Allen and his wife, Julie, of Hampton, Va.; a daughter, Karen Allen Conway and her husband, Ed Conway, of Seattle, Wash.; grandchildren, Nancy, Matthew and William Allen of Hampton, Va., and Delaney and Ross Conway of Seattle, Wash.; and many dear friends and relatives.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in Dunlap on June 23 at 1 p.m. at the Prospect United Methodist Church. Final interment of ashes will be at Mount Hawley Cemetery in Peoria.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to either Ann Arbor YMCA at 400 W. Washington St., Ann Arbor, MI 48103, or West Side United Methodist Church, 900 S. Seventh St., Ann Arbor, MI 48103.
