Obituary:
"Thomas Franklin McMillan was born in Topeka, Kansas, November 11, 1900 (sic 1899). He departed this life in the Ogallala Community Hospital, April 10, 1969, after a long illness, which had hospitalized him many times in recent years. Tom was the son of John Boone and Mary Sebel (sic Sebille) Boone (McMillan). He was the youngest of 10 children, all of whom have predeceased him. He went to school in Denver, Colorado, and his early working days were mostly in a packing house. Mr. McMillan moved to Arthur County in 1916, where he has lived for 52 years. His military service spanned the period from July 17, 1942 to March 27, 1943. On Nov. 4, 1946, Tom was united in marriage to Marie Jane Penny, in the town of Julesburg, Colorado. This good friend of the community has been a rancher here for 50 years, 1916 to 1966, when he retired. He was baptized in and was a member of the Arthur Community Baptist church. Surviving are his widow, Marie Jane; one son, Raymond Allen; two grandchildren Michael and Mark. He is mourned by other relatives, and a great number of friends and neighbors."

Comment: Tom's always claimed his birth as occurring in 1900, but he appeared in a June 1900 census, "Tom , son, b. Nov 1899 - 6 mos old". He could not have been on this census if he was born in 1900 since it was taken in June 1900.

Thomas Franklin McMillan was the tenth, and last, child of John Boone and Mary Sebille McMillan. He was born on November 11, 1889 in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. His parents were forty-nine and forty-six years old and his oldest sibling, Alexis, was twenty-seven years old. When Tommy was about fourteen to sixteen years old, his older brothers, Joe and Leon, decided to leave Denver to homestead in Nebraska. His parents and oldest sister Emma went with them and they all lived in Joe's home.
Their homestead was near Arthur, named after the President of the United States, which is right in the center of Arthur County and is the county seat. Joe's section was about thirty miles directly north of Arthur and Leon's was just to the west of Joe's. To the west of Leon was Mr. Gosling and to the west of him was the Spahn's section. To the east of Joe's was the Yates' section, and to the north was the Leaches' section.
Since Tommy had been too young to apply for a homestead, he had no land. At one point the government was going to foreclose on Joe. Tommy had some cows that he offered as collateral to secure a loan to forestall the foreclosure. Tom and Joe became fifty-fifty partners in the ranching business. Joe basically owned the land and Tommy the cows. Later Tom married a widow, Marie, and she had a section of land which she sold and they bought the Yates' section which was just east of Joe's.
From July 17, 1942 to March 27, 1943 Tommy served as a WWII Army Corpsman as a practical nurse. He told stories about dispensing nose and eye drops.
Joe's wife had died in 1936 and in the early 1940's Joe hired a widow, Marie Jane Penry Kirkpatrick, to help care for his aging parents and his children. Tommy was a forty-seven year old bachelor, but he got to know Marie and on November 4, 1946 he married her in Julesburg, Colorado. Marie was an aunt to Jessie L? and had adopted her niece's infant who was born in 1943. The baby's name was Raymond Allen but he was always called Allen. Tom adopted Allen and gave him the McMillan surname.
Tommy and Marie spent their remaining years in the Sandhills. He died on April 19, 1969 at 69 years, 4 months and 29 days. Marie Jane Penry was born on July 1, 1905 and died on April 5, 1995 at 89 years, 9 months and 4 days in Arthur, Nebraska. They are buried side-by-side in Ogallala Cemetery in Ogallala, Nebraska.
