Daughter of William Spencer Covert & Mary Cortright

Married Milo Andrus, 28 Feb 1858, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah

Children - Selestia Andrus, Elizabeth Andrus, Mary Emma Andrus, William Spencer Andrus, Helena Andrus, Carrie Andrus, Florence Andrus

Married John Wiley Holden, 1870, Salina, Sevier, Utah

Son - John Holden

"Emma's parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints two years before she was born. When she was about five years old, they moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. Soon after they arrived, the Saints were forced by mob sentiment to abandon their homes in Nauvoo.

The Covert family made their way to Winter Quarters, Nebraska, and made preparations to journey west. They were members of the second company of Mormon pioneers to leave for the West, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley early in the fall of 1847.

After being in the Valley for about three years, she was baptized and confirmed a member of Christ's restored church. She had been taught the doctrine and practice of plural marriage, which she devoutly believed. She accepted Milo Andrus' proposal of marriage and became his tenth wife on February 28, 1858. She became the mother of seven children. For a time, Emma lived with Milo at Cottonwood where her first daughter was born.

Then they moved to Dry Creek. Here, Emma assisted Jane Munday in the care and management of the Half Way House, and accepted the responsibility of caring for guests.

Emma chose not to accompany Milo when he was called to go to southern Utah. She was left alone with the responsibility of raising and educating her seven children.

Emma was faced with great challenges and hardships. She seized every opportunity to continue to study and learn and delighted in the beauties of nature.

She married John Wyley Holden, but no more information is given about this relationship. She passed away at the age of fifty-five." (DUP book, Women of Fortitude, page 1388 - Mary Emma Covert Andrus Holden.)

Emma Covert was Milo's tenth wife; she was a large woman, tall with dark brown hair and eyes. She was the 8th of ten children born in New York to Mary Cartwright and William Covert. Emma was born on May 10th, 1841. Her family had previously joined the church in 1838. When Emma was five, the family moved to Nauvoo, Illinois.
