Miss Sarah Barton Funeral is Held

May 19, 1945

The memorial service for Miss Sarah Barton was held at the home on West Second street, Tuesday afternoon at 1:30. Dr. George G. Hunt was the officiating minister. Mrs. Francis Miller sang with Mrs. E.W. Elliott at the organ. The Daughters of Union Veterans read their burial rites at the home. Pallbearers were Albert Barton, Ernest Barton, Ed Barton, Linn Barton, John Hummell and Ronald Hummell. Burial was in the Barton cemetery southwest of town.

Sarah H. Barton, daughter of Thomas and Lydia Cooper Barton, was born west of Mt. Pleasant, July 8, 1871, and passed from this life on the evening of Mother's Day, May 13, 1945, after several years of illness, at the age of 73 years.

When she was a small child the family moved to a farm in the Prairie Gem community where they resided for a few years before moving to a farm four miles south of Mt. Pleasant. Here she grew to young womanhood. She received her education in the public schools of Henry county and Howe's Academy. in Mt. Pleasant. After finishing school she taught school for about 25 years.

Miss Barton was a member of the Church of God and the Daughters of Union Veterans. She was a very successful teacher. She loved the church and Sunday school and for many years enjoyed teaching a Sunday school class.

She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Lydia Barton, nearly 96 years of age, and her sister, Miss Francis Barton, both of Mt. Pleasant. Her father passed away forty years ago, and her brother, Fred, about a year ago.
