John Gilbert Davis was the third of seven children and the first son born to Issac Beebe Davis (6 Narch 1781 - 12 January 1849) and Mary Schoonover (16 April 1792 - 11 November 1879). In 1842 John married Eliza Willis and the couple had four children: Mary, b. 1844; Josephine, bn. 1846; Winfield Scott (1848-1901); and John, b. 1849. Eliza died in 1852 and in 1853 John married Elizabeth DePuy Place (1824-1904). This union also produced four children: Electa, b. 1855; Charles, b. 1857; Susan, B. 1858; and Bettie, B. 1862.
According to the 1860 census, John was a Justice of the Peace. He lived most of his life in Meshoppen, Pa.
