Thomas E. Aumen
July 19, 1930 - January 7, 2021
Thomas Edward Aumen, 90, always had a deep love for family, making people laugh and fixing everything from cabinets to airplanes. He carried this love for family throughout his life until he passed away on January 7, 2021 at Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton, OH with his loving wife and many family members by his side. He was born on July 19, 1930 in Paradise Township, PA, to Bernard and Bertha (Smith) Aumen, Sr., the seventh of eleven children. He grew up working hard on his family farm, and his work ethic continued throughout his whole life. He earned the rank of Master Sergeant as a jet aircraft mechanic and quality control inspector during his 20 years with the United States Air Force. While he was on his first assignment at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, he met the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Brigitta Friese, who was his dental hygienist. They married in Germany on April 4, 1956 and shortly after moved to Thomas’ home in Pennsylvania for a year before he reenlisted. They were subsequently stationed at Selfridge AFB, MI, Woodbridge RAF, England and Nellis AFB, NV. He served a one year tour of combat duty in Vietnam and Thailand, before retiring from the military at Wurtsmith AFB, MI. He then owned and operated the Fairview Garage in Fairview, MI for 15 years. They then moved to Newport News, VA where he worked as an auto parts salesman for Twin B Auto Parts in Norfolk until he retired on July 31, 1993 and moved to Hamilton, OH. Over the next 25 years Tom and Brigitta traveled extensively throughout Europe, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. He is survived by his wife, Brigitta, three children, Carl (Lois) Aumen, of Omaha, NE, Ulrica (Thomas) Bowen of Zeeland, MI, Mark (Laura) Aumen of Littleton, CO, and son-in-law Terry Headlee of Kimball, MI. They have nine grandchildren: Christy (Chris) Berdan, Jim Headlee, Matthew Aumen, Laura (Dominic) Dougherty, John Aumen, Mary Aumen, Paul (Jillian) Bowen, Rachel Bowen, and Allan Aumen. They were blessed with two great-grandchildren: Nichole Berdan and Tyler Berdan, and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings: brother Adrian Aumen of Spring Grove, PA, and sisters Bertha Kuhn of New Oxford, PA, and Charlotte Hull of York, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, dear daughter Angelika Headlee, brothers Bernard Jr., Fr. Paul CPPS, Philip, and Lawrence Aumen, and sisters Sr. Paula Mary RSM, Estella Gebhart, and Theresa Del Rosso. He was a 4th Degree Deputy Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, served on the Oscoda County Michigan Planning Commission, and a member of the Hamilton German American Club. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, January 16, at St. Peter in Chains Catholic Church in Hamilton, 382 Liberty Avenue. Visitation will be on Friday, January 15 at Weigel Funeral Home, 980 N.W. Washington Blvd., Hamilton Ohio 45013 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Burial Service with Military Honors (invitation only) will be held 12:30 pm Tuesday, January 19, at Dayton National Cemetery.
