LEICESTER - Shirley J. (Johnson) Southwick, 78, of 101 Marshall St., a social worker and administrator, died yesterday in University of Massachusetts Hospital, Worcester, after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 51 years, Albert B. Southwick; two sons, Randall M. Southwick of Hubbardston and Jason J. Southwick of Leicester; two daughters, Jana S. Jarvi of Rutland and Martha E. Southwick of Vienna, Austria; two sisters, Janet Estey of Henrietta, N.Y., and Anna Hagberg of Princeton; and five grandchildren. A brother, Elmer Johnson of Holden, died many years ago. She was born in Holden, daughter of Elmer J. and Anna O. (Ottoson) Johnson, and lived here many years. She graduated from Holden High School and earned an associate's degree from North Park College in Chicago. She earned a bachelor's degree from Clark University in Worcester and a master's degree in social work from Boston University. She was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the WAVES (Women's Auxiliary Volunteer Services).

Mrs. Southwick was a licensed clinical social worker for many years before she retired. In the early 1950s, she was superintendent of a kindergarten for U.S. Army dependents in Stuttgart, Germany. She was a caseworker at the Worcester Children's Friend Society and the Family Service Organization of Worcester, where she became staff supervisor and then director of clinical services. She worked there for 20 years, until 1984. She then conducted a private practice in counseling and psychotherapy. And she taught courses in marital counseling at Clark University's COPACE program.

In 1992, she was honored by the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers for the "greatest contribution to social work Practice."

Mrs. Southwick was an avid reader, and was a member of several book clubs and play reading groups, including the Worcester Shakespeare Club. She often wrote book reviews for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. And she was a former trustee of the Leicester Public Library. She was a longtime member of First Unitarian Church in Worcester. She was an enthusiastic skier and tennis player for many years.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Unitarian Church, 90 Main St., Worcester. After cremation, burial will be at a later date in Quaker Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Unitarian Church, 90 Main St., Worcester, MA 01608. Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St., Worcester, is directing arrangements
