“ I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith”
2-Timothy 4:7

It is with a deep sense of loss that the Romero Family announces the passing of our beloved mother, Ofelia Romero, a lifelong resident of New Mexico. Ofelia passed quietly into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ of natural causes.
Mary was known by names like Peewee, Vieja, Vecina, Lita, Grandma, Mrs. Romero, but to us, she was always, Mom.
Mary always kept all of us in her daily prayers.
Ofelia was born the second of twelve children to Leopoldo and Sofia Rael in Sile, New Mexico. Mary also had a half-sister from her father's previous marriage, Louisa. Her parents operated a general store in Cochiti Pueblo where she spent her formative years. Those years in the pueblo fortified her with memories that lasted a lifetime, even to the time of her death. Mary learned the native language, Keresan, and continued to speak it over the years. Mary attended school in Peña Blanca, NM which was, at the time, no more than a schoolhouse.
Mary was a charter member of the greatest generation, where hard work, family, and the love of God were held in high regard, no matter your social standing. Ofelia was staunch in her love of God and the Catholic Church, the undying love of which helped her through many trying times. The most memorable precept that she espoused was to never forget the poor, even though she, herself, had experienced that very heavy burden.
Ofelia married Amado A. Romero (WWII POW) in 1950, a marriage which lasted until Amado's death in 2002. Their holy union produced ten children.
After moving around for Amado’s work, they settled down to raise their family in the North Valley of Albuquerque in 1955, where she lived up until the time of her death. Ofelia was a member in good standing of St. Joseph’s on the Rio Grande Catholic Church.
Ofelia's talents included her beautiful operatic voice and her amazing culinary skills. Ofelia also loved to dance. Ofelia even participated in tribal dances in Cochiti Pueblo as a young girl.
Ofelia was preceded in death by her parents, Leopoldo and Sofia, her husband of 52 years, Amado, her beloved son, Leo, her son-in-law, Jon Facey, her sisters, Lousia Crespín, Diane Kroff and Angela and brothers, Henry, Leo, Ralph, Ivan, Oliver, Arnold and David.
Ofelia is survived by her children, Mark, James (Doris), María, Leonard, Helen Johnsen (Mike), David, Patrick, Ann Margaret Bieri (Mark) and John (Abigail). Ofelia also leaves behind eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Her surviving siblings include Lionel Rael (Caroline), Angela Viola Domíguez, and Elsie "Eppie" Rael. Ofelia is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Celedonia Rael, Priscilla Rael and Pat Rael, brother-in-law, Herb Korff, as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
We would like to extend a special thank you to our siblings, María, Leonard, Pat and Ann who tirelessly cared for mom 24/7 in her time of need. We would also like to thank High Desert Hospice for their assistance in her care in the last days of her life.
A Catholic service with reception will take place at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, please support the poor and disadvantaged as Ofelia would have wanted. Our Mother would emphatically say Do not be sad for me because I am now in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
