He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Ercell Bates; brothers, James and Alvin Bates; children, Diana Sue Bates, Thomas H Bates; and stepson, Mike Drake.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Bates; children, Judy Mills (Marion, IN), David Bates and wife Dana (Sevierville, TN); stepchildren, Jane Drake (Albany, IN), Steve Drake and wife Carolyn (Marion, IN), Tonya Faig and husband Mike (Sevierville, TN); sisters, Flossie Crader (Marion, IN), Ann Patton (St. Marys, OH), Marie Lovelady (Montpelier, IN); 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
