Edward Wallace Muir passed away surrounded by his family on October 10, 2007 at LDS Hospital. He was born June 25, 1921 in Bountiful, Utah to Edward Oliver Muir and Mary Whitesides Muir. He married Mary Margaret Morgan in the Salt Lake Temple in 1943.
He was an eagle scout and rode the train to Washington, D.C. to attend the National Jamboree in 1934. He graduated from Davis High School where he was senior class president. He then attended the University of Utah where he was senior class president graduating with honors, member of Skull and Bones, Owl and Key and Beehive. He was a member and President of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
He served during World War II as a Lieutenant in the Navy aboard the USS Belleau Wood, where he saw extensive action in the South Pacific. After the war he finished his education at Harvard Business School, earning a MBA in 1947. Upon graduation he returned to Salt Lake City to join the family produce business. He was the president of Muir-Roberts Co., Inc. a grower, packer and shipper of fruit and vegetables with operations in Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Nevada. He was at his desk for 60 years.
He was also an owner of E.O. Muir and Assoc, and the Bountiful Bowl. He was actively involved in the national fruit and vegetable industry attaining the postions of President of the National Onion Association and President of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association. He was an active member and High Priest of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was engaged in civic affairs, serving on the Utah Symphony Board, Jaycees and Kiwanis. He enjoyed being a member of the Alta Club and the Salt Lake Country Club.
Ed was someone who was significantly influenced by the Great Depression and World War II. He loved people, the downtown community, skiing, University of Utah athletics, the Jazz, traveling the world, especially Scotland, spaghetti and meatballs, being on the move, Camp Steiner/Mirror Lake and reunions. Ed was a generous and kind person to his family and all those he encountered. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dr. Mark W. Muir.
Survived by his wife; brother, Richard W. Muir; sister, Jean M. Glenn (Jim) Resch; children, Edward W. Muir, Jr., Chicago; Prescott M. (Sharon) and Phillip R. (Kathy); grandchildren, P. Matthew (Brooke) Muir, Adria J. (Geoffrey) Swindle, Emily C. (Kimball) Redd, Lucien P. (Meridith) Muir and Michael R. (Laura) Muir; and six great-grand-children.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the LDS Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 So. Wasatch Dr., Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends and family may call at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 So., SLC, Friday from 6-8 p.m. and at the Stake Center, Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Burial will be in the Bountiful City Cemetery.
