At age 18 enlisted on August 30, 1862, at Westfield; mustered in November 18, 1862, as private in Co. I, 156th New York infantry; killed in action at Fort Bisland, Louisiana.

Union forces under command of Gen. Nathaniel Banks made their approach on the fort in late morning, with battle beginning at about 11:00 A.M., and ending around dusk. Confederate gunboat "Diana" which had been recently captured from the Union Navy helped the Confederate defense by shelling the Union troops. That evening, Upon learning of Union troops landing in his rear, Confederate Gen. Richard Taylor evacuated the fort.
