George was the son of Jonathan Graves and Frances Rendt Graves. He grew up on his father's farm in Cottrellville Township, St. Clair County, Michigan, and by 1869 was a sailor on Great Lakes merchant ships. About 1874, he took over the management of the Union Hotel in today's Marine City, Michigan, but soon moved on to Port Huron, Michigan, where he served as Chief of Police and U. S. Marshall. About 1888 he was living in Omaha, Nebraska, where he also served as with the police department, attaining the rank of Sergeant by 1892. By 1900 was living in Washington State where he was a farmer. He was married four times: (1) Mary Ida Love, on September 13, 1869, Marine City, Michigan - deceased (2) Eva May Graves (maiden name Graves) on June 21, 1879, South Bass Island, Ottawa County, Ohio - divorced (3) Mary Mette Hansen, on May 8, 1888, Omaha, Nebraska - deceased (4) Anna Strauss, on January 1, 1912, Kirkland, Washington - deceased.

"Mr. George M. D. Graves, for years a prominent resident of Happy Valley died at his home Monday. Mr. Graves was born in Michigan December 29, 1847. In his home state, at Fort Huron (sic), he acted as chief of police for twelve years and as U. S. Marshal seventeen years. He took a prominent part in community life in Happy Valley Grange. Surviving relatives are his widow, Mrs. Annie L. Graves, a daughter, Mrs. W. R. Symmonds of Hollywood, California; a son, Bayard S. Graves of Ohio, three grand children and a great granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Happy Valley Grange Hall, interment at Kirkland cemetery."

"Funeral services were held this afternoon for George M. D. Graves, one of the pioneers of the Happy Valley district who passed away at his home Monday morning at the age of eighty years. The funeral was held under the direction of F. A. Fisher, funeral director of Issaquah. Services were held at the Grange Hall in Happy Valley with interment in the Kirkland Cemetery. Mr. Graves was born in Port Huron, Michigan, in 1847. He came to the coast about 40 years ago and to Happy Valley about 22 years ago. While in Port Huron Mr. Graves was the Chief of Police for 12 years and following that was U. S. Marshall for that district for 17 years. The deceased is survived by his wife, Anna L. Graves, one son, Bayard Graves of Clyde, Ohio, and one daughter, Mrs. W. R. Symmonds of Hollywood, California."
