Rita was born in Starkenburg, Missouri on December 20, 1925, a daughter of the late Frances (Klahs) and Joseph Bruckerhoff. On April 24, 1947, she was united in marriage to Roger J. Gawer at St. Martin’s Church in Starkenburg, Mo.
She was a member of St. George Church, where she sang in the choir and served in the Legion of Mary, leading the rosary regularly. She was also a member of the Hermann V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Hermann Eagles Auxiliary, where she enjoyed socializing. Before her retirement at 65, she worked at both Florsheim and International Shoe Companies in Hermann.
Rita is survived by a son, Gary and wife Linda Gawer of Bryan, Tx.; by a granddaughter Gretchen and husband Joseph Miller, of College Station, Tx.; by two great-grandsons Graham and Rowan Miller; and by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister Regina Schneider, and seven brothers Gerhardt, Frank, Ben, Albert, George, Martin and Lawrence Bruckerhoff.
Due to the ongoing national health crisis, services will be postponed until travel and gathering can safely resume, likely late spring or early summer. Details will be posted on Toedtmann & Grosse’s website.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows, Starkenburg, or St. George School, care of Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home in Hermann, Mo.
