Ben Davis Brabson, IV., age 81, of Boyds Creek, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2021 at home on his cherished farm surrounded by family. Mr. Brabson grew up and spent most of his adult years on the farm which overlooks the confluence of the French Broad River and Boyds Creek in Sevier County. The Brabson farm is designated as a Tennessee Pioneer Century Farm and has been in the family for over 225 years. The present home, built in 1856, is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

After receiving his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee, Mr. Brabson served his country with distinction as a U.S. Naval intelligence officer during the Vietnam War era, with four years on active duty and three years in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Mr. Brabson graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1974 and went on to practice law in Sevierville for many years. Mr. Brabson later reduced his full-time practice of law and concentrated on raising cattle on the Brabson farm and running his other businesses in Sevier County.

When not solving the NY Times crossword puzzle (in pen), Mr. Brabson was an avid reader and in his later years regularly marveled at the wonders of using his Kindle to instantly download library books. He was a supporter of the Seymour Library and the Sevier County Food Ministry. He enjoyed duplicate bridge and was a Life Master, playing in many regional and several national tournaments. Long active in Democratic Party politics, he served as a state delegate from Tennessee to the 1980 Democratic National Convention in New York City. After the birth of his grandson Peter, Mr. Brabson instigated an annual tradition known as “beach week” which generated many fond memories for the entire extended family.

Mr. Brabson was the son of lifelong Sevier County residents (the late) Ben Davis Brabson, Sr. and Estalena Rogers Brabson.

Survivors include: his wife of 59 years, Elaine DeSimone Brabson; daughter Catherine Louise Brabson and partner Robert Kollar, Park City, Utah; son Benjamin Davis Brabson, III and fiancé Lucinda Bailey, Sevierville; daughter Rebecca Brightwell Brabson and grandson Peter Benjamin Brabson, Knoxville; sisters Margaret Brabson Hicks, Sevierville and Elizabeth Brabson (Ray) Kimbrell, Anderson, S.C.; nieces, Serena Kimbrell (Dan) Coughenour, Anderson, S.C. and Sarah Hicks Hawkins, Sevierville; nephew, John (Renee) Kimbrell, Spartanburg, S.C.; great-nieces, Katie Coughenour and Elizabeth Coughenour; great-nephew, Conner Kimbrell; and many cousins.

Mr. Brabson was a member of Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church in Boyds Creek.

Due to COVID-19, there will be no funeral or receiving of friends. At a future date, there will be a family graveside burial and service at the Brabson Cemetery with Rev. Eugene Thomas officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brabson Family Scholarship Fund at: SCHS Foundation- Brabson Scholarship, P.O. Box 4124, Sevierville, TN 37864; to the Sevier County Food Ministries, 890 Old Knoxville Hwy., Sevierville, TN 37862; or to a charity of choice.
