Wanda Mae Strait (Bishop), age 85, of Readstown, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021, at her home.

She was born September 9, 1935, in Cullowhee, North Carolina to the late Daniel “Charlie” and Jessie (Ashe) Bishop.

After graduating high school in 1954, she enlisted in the Army.

She served in the Women’s Army Corps with the 5017 Area Service Unit, 506th Repl Co. and 6th Armd Div. in Fort Leonard Wood, MO.

She met Robert E. Strait while they were in the Army at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and were married April 23, 1955, in Waynesville, MO.

Wanda worked at the Kickapoo Inn and Bethel Home doing home healthcare.

What Wanda loved most was her family, especially spoiling her grandchildren, reading books by Stephen King, embroidery, drinking her coffee or Sprite while eating skittles and toast while sitting on her front porch. She enjoyed old western movies and T.V. shows with actors like Randolph Scott and Dale Robertson. She did not like Audie Murphy; she said he was too smooth.

Survivors include her children: Charles E. (Carmen) Strait, Robert “Bob” Strait and Alan J. (RaChell) Strait; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her siblings: Charles “Bud” Bishop and Grover Bishop; other relatives and friends.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert E. Strait; her daughter, Brenda K. (Strait) Mills, her grandson, Brooks A. Strait and her siblings, James and Rachel.

Per Wanda’s wishes, no services will be held.

Special thanks to Lisa Hughes.
