Born in Spencer County, Indiana, Benjamin was born in the middle of 11 Grigsby brothers and 1 sister. They lived among the Lincoln Family members in Indiana until the Grigsby Clan migrated to Carroll County, Missouri in 1852. Bringing with them the anvil and leg vice from the Thomas Lincoln farm and grandfather "Ole Reuben" Grigsby.

He joined the military as did many if not all of his brothers. Benjamin Grigsby, Union, Private, Company K, 23rd Missouri Infantry Volunteers.

Benjamin Grigsby was killed in military action during the Civil War.

The following is from page 366, "History of Carroll County 1881:" Benj Grigsby and P. Hudson were killed, Leonard Oster and J. W. Anderson wounded and F. Albright and Jas. Murray taken prisoners at Shiloh."
