Caroll Robert “Windy” Baker, 92, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney after contracting Covid-19.

He was the youngest of five children born to David McKinley and June (Loos) Baker on April 29, 1928 in rural Crawford County. Family legend maintains he was given the nickname “Windy” when he was a toddler because he was (in)famously talkative. He was raised in the Chauncey Community and was a 1947 graduate of Bridgeport High School.

Following high school, Windy enlisted in the US Navy. He served aboard several destroyers as a machinist’s mate, operating in the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea during the Korean War.

Windy married Alice Marie Jennings, of Olney, on March 17, 1957 in Shawneetown, Illinois. They had one son, Michael David, born in 1965; and were married 62 years until Marie passed in 2019. Windy and Marie were content living a modest life, living in the same small home together for almost 60 years. They enjoyed tending a large vegetable garden each year. They had a friendly ongoing competition with the neighbors for which garden would come up first and then who could give the other the most excess food after all the canning was done. Windy and Marie also enjoyed being involved with their two grandchildren and often would drive to Rochester to attend their activities. Windy cared for Marie at home during her long descent into dementia until the last few weeks of her life despite his own health issues.

Windy worked in Agriculture most of his life, with 34 years at Rich-Law Service Company (FS). He enjoyed hunting raccoon, deer, and quail. He enjoyed watching major league baseball, regardless of who was playing. While he considered himself a St. Louis Cardinals fan, he could almost as often be found watching the Chicago Cubs on tv. One of his favorite life experiences was his lone visit to Wrigley Field to attend a Cardinals / Cubs game when he was in his seventies.

Windy was preceded in death by his parents, David and June Baker and his wife Marie. He was also preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses: Edna Lucille Pauley and her husband Millard; Geneva Longnecker and her husband Harold; Harold Baker and his wife Ethel; and Viva Marie Angle and her husband Dale; and nephews David Pauley, Dick Angle and Donald Angle.

He is survived by son Michael and his wife Julie from Rochester, Illinois, grandson Mitch Baker of Springfield, Illinois, and granddaughter Natalie Baker of Rochester and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to Carle Center for Philanthropy (Richland County Hospice) or the Richland County Senior Citizens Center.

There will be a private family Graveside Service held for Windy at Waggoner Cemetery in Chauncey.
