Sharon Louise Washum was born July 30, 1944 in Memphis, Tennessee to Irline Mathis and Watson Edgin, and departed this life on December 28, 2020.

She taught in the Fort Smith School District for 33 years, imparting her wisdom and guidance to generations of elementary students, teaching first grade for most of those years. She later taught at Bost where she shared her gifts with special needs students in the community. She made many cherished friends in her decades of teaching whom she treasured like family.

Preceding her in death was her beloved husband, Bill Washum, whom she met while a student at Arkansas State Teacher’s College (UCA). They were married 33 years and cherished their two children, Joe (Marley) and Amy Elizabeth, who were the joy of their lives. Also preceding Sharon was her mother, Irline, whom she lovingly cared for at home until she passed in 1996; and a brother, Watson Edgin, Jr.

Sharon cherished her family and devoted her early retirement years to caring for her four young grandsons – Joseph, Ian, Gabriel, and William. She spent many happy years picking them up from preschool and elementary school, teaching them to read, attending Grandparents Day lunches and school plays, and delighting in their many achievements. Along with Joe and Amy, her grandsons were one of her greatest joys.

In recent years, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter Amy Elizabeth, who devoted her life full-time to Sharon’s care, ensuring she could continue living at home, near her family.

Sharon was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend; a talented artist who literally threw her emotions into her art; a lifelong Baptist; a member of the Arkansas Education Association (AEA) and NEA; a former Tri Sigma; she was a “cat whisperer” who gave a loving home to many strays in her life; had perfected the “teacher voice” when needed; was a fierce card player; and was an enthusiastic host to many high school jam sessions in her living room; and most importantly, loved being surrounded by the noisy, rambunctious, full-of-life crew that is her family.

Sharon leaves behind two children, Joe Paul Washum and Amy Elizabeth Washum; her daughter in law, Marley Nicole Washum; her grandsons, Joseph Knowlton Washum, Ian Mathis Washum, Gabriel James Washum and William Butler Washum.

A private memorial service will be held at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith, on Monday, January 4, 2021 with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery.
