PORTSMOUTH—Robert E. “Bobby” Mounie Jr., 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on November 11, 2020. Born on December 22, 1933, he was a native and lifelong resident of Portsmouth,Virginia.

He is predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Elsie Ireland Mounie; parents Robert E. Mounie, Sr. and Pearl Elizabeth Gardner Mounie; sister Patsy Payne; special aunt Ida Lee Denny; and niece Sharon David.

Bobby was a 1952 graduate of St. Paul's Catholic High School and a member of the varsity football team. Following graduation he served in the US Navy, which included a tour in the Mediterranean with a stop in Paris, France. He then returned home and began his career with Norfolk Southern Railway as a locomotive engineer. Bobby was an active member of the Brotherhood Locomotive Engineers where he served in various leadership roles. In his spare time, Bobby loved coaching his children, grandchildren, as well as many children of the Churchland area Little Leagues. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His beautiful morning smile and his wit will be missed but never forgotten. His inclusive nature and his love for children and animals touched the lives of many.

Survivors include four children, Gayle Smith (Rick), Robert B. (Tess), Cris Taylor, and Lisa Shelburne (Robby); sisters Carole Phillips, Mary Ellen Walker, and Margaret Grimes; grandchildren Katie Bracken, Ian Smith, Kirsten Jorgenson, Mary Kate Smith, Patrick Worley, Brenden Shelburne, Matthew Shelburne, Shane Taylor, Kelsey Mounie, Rhys Mounie; 4 great-grandchildren; and multiple nieces and nephews.

Due to the Covid Pandemic the family has planned a private Mass. A public graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 17, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth. Please be respectful of our vulnerable family and friends by wearing a face mask. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oasis Social Ministries, 800 Williamsburg Ave., Portsmouth, VA 23704.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Megan Cunningham and Leah Evans for their compassionate and loving care of Bobby during his illness.
