Naomi Stephens Shumate, 93, passed away peacefully at Trinity Village on Saturday, December 26.

She was born January 8, 1927, to Claudia Eckard Stephens and Richard Stephens.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Jim Shumate, sons Jimmy and Randy, sisters Bernice Wilson and Geneva Powell, and her brother Ralph Eckard.

She is survived by her brother Richard Stephens, her daughters Rita Miller (Frank) and Judy Ingold. Her grandchildren include Rick Jenkins (Gina), Greg Jenkins (Elaine), Jimmy Shumate (Tonya), Ashley Lail (Audie), John Miller (Natalya), Matt Russ ( Jen), Holly Johnson (Matt), and Colby Shumate (Sara). Great grandchildren are Zach, Anna, Claire, Will, Sam, Max, Hannah, Allison, Tyler, Cole, Charlize, Austin, and Cadence.

Naomi was a lifelong active member of Penelope Baptist Church (now Open Door) and a member of the Joy Sunday School Class.

A private graveside service will be held at Catawba Memorial Park with Pastor Shawn Davis officiating. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Trinity Village for their many kindness to our mother.
