He married (2) AMANDA C. BASTIN January 20, 1859 in Monroe County, Indiana. She was born February 11, 1827, and died March 23, 1865 in Morgan County, Indiana. (Samaria Cemetery)
He married (3) SARAH J. BRAZELTON December 19, 1866. She was born December 31, 1827 and died February 7, 1898 in Monroe County, Indiana.

Martinsville Republican July 29,1886
Benjamin N. Applegate, an old and respected citizen of Green (Gregg) Township died Thursday, the 22 age 56 years. Mr Applegate had growing on his face for the past five years what was supposed to be a tumor. It did not trouble him much and he paid but little attention to it. Some four months ago it became malignant: he was taken Ill and continually grew worse until he died. Since his death the doctors have pronounced the tumor to have been a rose cancer, Mr. Applegate member of the I. O. O. F. and was buried by the Eminence lodge.
