Edward was said to be the first person bringing a sailing ship from SF to Napa, California, but that can't be confirmed. He married the widowed Mary Esther (Norton) Hulse, either in NY or California, ca 1871; one son, George. Afflicted with St. Vitus' Dance, Edward's life was difficult, and his son George and stepson Frank Hulse, were raised in other households after Edward and Mary divorced in 1878. It is believed Mary returned to New York, where she may be the Mary E. Smith who died in 1882. From 1910 forward, Edward was 'in care'--either at the Napa Infirmary or Napa State Hospital.
