Polly married Allumbee Abbott (1795 - 1854) (Find A Grave memorial #220062897), the third son of John "Jack" Abbott and Margaret Williams (1757 - Unk).

Her husband's identity has for many years been confused with that of his nephew, Allumbee Abbott (1812 - 1846) Find A Grave Memorial #20298727, who was the son of Allumbee's eldest brother, James Abbott. The confusion arose out of a belief that James Abbott had died in North Carolina in 1803, so his correct descendants had not previously been investigated

Mary "Polly" McDowell married Allumbee probably in Gallatin, Sumner, Tennessee, before moving to Greene County, Indiana sometime between 1821 and 1830 along with much of the Abbott family. In 1850 Allumbee and Polly are found in Logan County, Illinois. Probate records indicate guardianship of their two youngest children was granted to Polly on July 15, 1854 in Sangamon County [(Lumpy Abbot): Record of Wills, Book 2, 1852-1855, p.383; 07/15/1854 Guardianship of Oliver and Martha granted to Mary Abbott]. Polly is thereafter found, in the Illinois 1855 census as Mary Abbott with one male and one female age 10-20, in Logan County, living near daughter Saletta Abbott (Thomas) Phillips.

According to Census' from 1820 and 1850, Allumbee and Polly had many as fifteen children, about half of whom are unidentified as of yet as several years of marriage records from Greene County, Indiana appear to be missing. Identified children include: Nainetta Abbott Madden (1820 - 1907), Saletta Abbott Phillips (1821 - Aft. 1870), Priscilla Abbott Spainhower (1823 - 1867), James A. Abbott (1827 - ), Jason D. (1832 - ), Mary (1835- ), Oliver W. Abbott (1838 - 1905 ), Martha (1841? - ). Other Greene County, Indiana Abbotts may be attributable to Allumbee's brother, George.

It should be noted that Polly was the only wife of Allumbee, while Orpha Hills was married to his nephew of the same name.
