Obituary - Handwritten by her grandson, William James Ostrander:
Mary Lucinda Nutting Weast was born March 14th, 1840 near Tonawanda, Niagara Co., New York. She was married to James H. Weast, May 16th, 1858. They lived happily together until the month of May 1898 when her beloved husband was called to the great beyond.
Their wedded life was blessed by the birth of seven children, one of whom was born soon after the loyal father left to take up arms in defense of that government of which he was so proud, against the Confederacy.
This son, William A., died before the return of his father, who returned safely home.
The other six children survived, and mourn the loss of that mother, who was endowed with a kind, loving and cheerful disposition, ever ready, at every opportunity, to reach out a helping hand, her lips ever ready to form a kind, loving, consoling word to those in trouble and sorrow.
The entire community can be counted among her friends, without a single exception, as is evidenced by the collection of flowers at her home, where her body awaits her last earthly journey to its resting place, her soul having flown to meet her loved one in Heaven.
The surviving six children are, respectively:
Mrs. Eleanor M. Ostrander of Worthing, S.D., who has been with her mother for some weeks, and was at her bedside as her soul departed Heavenward.
James H. Weast of Wessington Springs, S.D., who was unable to get here in time.
John M. Weast of West Point, Wis., who was at his mother's bedside, and during her sickness was ever ready by word or deed to help her.
Edward L. Weast of West Point, Wis., who also was at the deathbed of his mother.
George W. Weast, at whose home the beloved mother has for the past few years made her home.
Mrs. John Horton of Mason City, Iowa, was not able to be at her mother's side when the Great Reaper, death, gathered her home, but she arrived at Okee, Wednesday morning, at eight o'clock.
The wife, husband and all of the surviving children , moved to West Point, Wis., from New York State, arriving here April 16th, 1875. The youngest child, Mary Ruth, now Mrs. John Horton, of Mason City, Iowa, was the only one born in this community.
There are several grandchildren surviving, among whom are;
Edward's children, Edna, Mrytle, Royal and Bertha.
George's children, Neva and Benjamin.
Mate's children, Etta, Ralph and Edward.
Eleanor's children, Willie and Wilbert.
The daughter-in-laws. Julia, Mrs. George Weast, Lizzie, Mrs. Edward Weast and Edna, Mrs. James Weast, all sincerely mourn the loss of she who was ever so kind and loving.
May God bless her and keep her, and we, so that we will earn the right to meet her at the Resurrection of Christ and Judgement of the world.
