Following a long battle with cancer, Ivan Peterson, 77, died peacefully on May 27, 2011, at his home in Sidney with family who loved and cared for him.

Ivan was born in Sidney Nov. 25, 1933, to Ivan J. and Anna (Jorgensen) Peterson. Upon graduation from Sidney High School, he completed his pre-dental studies at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. He then attended the University of Minnesota Dental School in Minneapolis. After receiving his degree in 1957, Ivan entered into practice with his father in Sidney. He continued to practice until his retirement in 1982.

In 1955, he married Beverley Anderson in Sidney. Ivan and Bev had three children, Barb, David and Ron. He loved being a dad and spending time with his kids. In 1965, they built a cabin at Rock Creek on Fort Peck Lake where the entire family enjoyed fishing, water-skiing, boating and riding motorcycles. He spent numerous hours repairing and maintaining those motorcycles!

Ivan was a member of the board of Community Memorial Hospital during the construction of what is now the Sidney Health Center. He was elected to the board of directors of the Richland National Bank in 1970, serving as chairman for the past 26 years. Ivan volunteered as an EMT with the Richland County Ambulance Service for 20 years. This was his way of giving back to the community.

Some of Ivan’s happiest times were spent flying his own airplane. Ivan, Bennett Folstad, and Keith Kinden built and flew a full-sized experimental aircraft, the Acro Sport II. As a youngster, he started building and flying RC model airplanes, a hobby that he enjoyed all of his life — good times and great friends. Ivan and Bev traveled extensively across the United States, including Hawaii, frequenting the back roads of each region. Autumn meant that it was time to climb into a truck and haul sugar beets.

Ivan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverley; daughter Barb (John) Welnel, Powell, Wyo.; sons David (Karen) Peterson, Modesto, Calif., and Ron (Marie) Peterson, Bakersfield, Calif.; grandchildren Shauna (Adam) Marvin, Brandon (Andrea) Peterson, Samantha Peterson, Matt Peterson, Nick Evans, T. J. (Meredith) Evans and Kelly Evans; great-grandchildren Stacey and Aubrey Evans; and a half-sister, Alice Loman, Idaho.

Ivan was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Laurie Haugen; his half-brothers, Leon, Earl and Gordon Morrison; and half-sisters Inez Morris and Ruby Morrison.
