Charley was born in Mills, Iowa, the son of James Melroy Byerley (1843-1930) and Georgia Anna Geddes Byerley (1850-1888). In 1804 he married Della Lamar. He and his family then moved to Nebraska by covered wagon in the late 1800s, moved again to the Oklahoma Territory, and finally settled in Pratt County, Kansas. They opened the first wagon barn in the area, a forerunner of the modern-day motel.

He was preceded in death by his father; mother; half-sister, Mary Elizabeth Byerley; three brothers, James Melroy Byerley Jr.; Harry L Byerley; and Fredrick Wilmer Byerley; and two daughters, Mable Anna Byerley and Bethel Clarinda Byerley.

He was survived by his wife, Della Lamar Byerley; two brothers, Eddy Ross Byerley and Leon Geddes Byerley; an adopted half-sister Zetta DeFrances Madera Byerley Appleton Carnarsky; a half-sister Georgia Anne Byerley; three sons, Lawrence Clayton Byerley, Ray Lamar Byerley, and James Melroy Byerley; and many grandchildren.
