George Hackett
George A. Hackett, 96, a retired employee of the Post Office died in Moscow, Idaho, Monday.
Hackett had lived here since before the turn of the century and spent over 32 years working for the post office. He moved to Pullman five years ago to be near his only daughter. He carried the first rural route and was the first postal employee to retire here.
Hackett came to Walla Walla from Olathe, Kan., where he was born Sept. 16, 1875. He married Cora C. Claytor in Sedalia, Mo. in 1898; she died in 1957. They spent all but two of their married years in Walla Walla.
Hackett, who was superintendent of mails at the post office during the last 15 years of his employment, served under three postmasters and at four different locations. He covered the 25 miles of the first rural route with a horse and buggy.
Hackett is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Ralph G. Devlin, of Pullman, Wash.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Blue Mt. Lodge No. 13, F & AM, El Katif Shrine of Spokane, and the Scottish Rite bodies.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday in the chapel of the Herring Funeral Home with Dr. Edward V. Wright of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Concluding services and vault interment will follow at the Masonic Cemetery, Ritualistic graveside services will be conducted by Blue Mt. Lodge No. 13, F & AM.
