Ida Catherine Bruner was a daughter of Daniel and Margaret Peneton Bruner, born in Concord Township, Champaign County, Ohio, on December 11, 1860*. She grew up on her parents' farm, and learned the meaning of hard -- but rewarding -- work. She had an independent spirit which served her well all the years of her long life. She married James William Coleman (1860-1893) on 15 March 1881 in Concord Township, Champaign County, Ohio. He was a farm laborer and then miller by trade, and took his family with him as he followed the grain harvests in Ohio, Kansas and Missouri. Ida and James were the parents of six children: Zola Mae (1882-1921), John Pearl (1883-1979), William Smith (1885-1968), Mary Margaret (1887-1969), Viola Augusta (1888-1965) and Claude Alvin (1891-1979). James died suddenly at the age of 33 while the family was "out west." It was up to Ida to return six small children to the family home in Ohio. She lived in Champaign County as a widow for the next fify years. She was an invalid for the last two and one-half years of her life, and bedfast for the last ten weeks preceeding her death. She died on April 19, 1943 at the home of her daughter, Viola Augusta Coleman Shafer, at the age of 82. At the time of her death, she was survived by twenty-eight grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren.
