Hugh Robert Coleman, the first son of the union of John L. and Mary Harper Coleman, was given the first name of his maternal grandfather, Hugh Harper. Why "Robert" was chosen as his middle name is unknown.

He appears as a member of the John L. Coleman household in the US Census of 1860, in Wheeling, West Virginia, and again in the New Jasper, Greene County, Ohio, US Census of 1870. Because the family relocate once again to Wheeling, West Virginia, before the close of the year in 1870, the John L. Coleman household also appears in the census for that city.

Robert is listed in the federal census of 1880 as a single, white male, approximately 21 years of age (birth year 1858), employed as a farm hand, residing in the home of James Messich, in Goshen Township, Champaign County, Ohio. The notation also lists the birthplaces of his father and mother as "Ohio," which we now know to be incorrect.

In the US Census of 1900, the household of Hugh Coleman appears in Springfield Township, Clark County, Ohio. Listed are Hugh (age 42, with a birthdate of March 1858 in West Virginia), a foreman for a railroad; his wife Madge,"Margaret, Maggie, Stock," (age 33, with a birthday of August 1866 in Ohio); and George E., (age 14, with a birthday of October 1885 in Ohio). A notation lists the length of the marriage to-date as 17 years (about 1883).

By the time of the next census, in 1910, the household of Hugh R. Coleman appears in Ottawa Township, Allen County, Ohio. Hugh R. appears as the head of the household, age 52, a foreman at a wood mill. His wife's name is listed as Ann, age 42, born in Ireland. The length of the marriage is shown as three years (about 1907). Also listed are Susan May Rise, age 16, a step-daughter, born in Ohio; Carrie N. Rise, age 12, a step-daughter, born in Ohio; and Cynthia Rise, age 8, a step-daughter, born in Ohio. Ann was the young widow of Loren D. Rise, who was killed in a tragic refinery accident in Lima, Ohio, in March 1903.

At the time of his death, at City Hospital, he was a laborer at the Lima LOC Company. He was married, and resided on West Kibley Street, in the 6th Lima Ward. He was 62 years, 8 months and 24 days old at the time of death.

Hugh Robert Coleman's gravesite is located in Section 6, Lot 17 of the Woodlawn Cemetery. The family plot was owned by his second wife, Anna Rise Coleman. While there is a Rise family marker nearby, there is (as of 2009) no headstone at Hugh's grave.
