Faith healer. Miracle man. The wood kindling peddler came to America when a young man. He professed to be the 88th, and final, incarnation of the Biblical prophet Isaiah. He is said to have had healing powers. Thousands attended his revivals. John Cudney reportedley arrived in New Orleans in 1916. His apperances along the Mississippi River had such enthusiastic audiences that police were called to keep control. Once, those police ended up in the river, overrun by the crowd. When invited by the authorities in New Orleans to leave, he went to Los Angeles, where his flock grew even larger, and his popularity blossomed. Running into legal difficulty, for which he was acquitted, in Los Angeles, (his followers had threatend to kill the prosecuters) he choose a spot in Oroville. His "immortals" built a splendid lodge there. He wrote a book, "The City of New Jerusalem". Brother Isaiah died at the lodge in July of 1934. Forty of his immortals waited for days, watching for him to resurrect. He did not. They put the prophet with the long white beard and flowing robes to rest there, under a tree, unmarked.
